To: dianne@sandelman.ocunix.on.ca From: images@iag.net (James Adams) Subject: Farm Dam research: possible assistance. Status: OR I am trying to assess the impacts on many small dams on a river system, in order to generate more interest in this area. It is my feeling that numerous small storages have similar impacts on streams as large ones on rivers. Would it be posssible for you to circulate the letter below to some of your collegues and/or contacts? Any help would be really really appreciated. Thank you. James ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Greetings, FARM DAM RESEARCH: POSSIBLE ASSISTANCE. In searching the WWW for research literature and contacts I came across your e-mail address. I hope you may be able to assist me or refer this mail to someone who is involved in this field of research. My sincere apologises if this is not related to your field of expertise. Basically, I would like to get into contact with people involved with issues concerned with water storage by small dams used for agricultural purposes (i.e. farm dams). Issues involve (amongst others): - the assessment of impacts of farm dams on stream (i.e. the hydrological, geomorphic and ecological affects of farm dam construction), - the policy (State and Federal) surrounding the construction and harvesting of surface water runoff by farm dams, and - the practical implementation of the policies, particularly concerning possible EIA procedures (if any) and possible monitoring relating to farm dams. This forms part of a research for a Master of Science degree, undertaken by myself at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. The research findings will be submitted to decision makers in the Government and private sectors to increase awareness of the above issues. It is also hoped that the this will stimulate networking between researchers and policy makers, involved with small scale agricultural water storage, in different countries. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing from you.
