I-NLSP Specification Status

Hello all,

I've gone ahead and started the I-D submission process with I-NLSP
(Integrated Network Layer Security Protocol). There seems to be some
confusion between what that process is, but hopefully that will be
straightened out quickly.

If I-NLSP seems overly complex, please realize that I tried *not* to
change the functionality of ISO 11577, so I-NLSP will contain most of
the technical complexity and perceived technical "problems" of ISO
11577. The steps in producing I-NLSP existed of 1) Obtaining an
on-line ISO 11577 and converting it to ascii; 2) Eliminating any
perceived Connection Oriented parts (some of this was interpretation);
3) Massaged text and reorganized sections to improve readability (some
of this was also interpretation); and 4) Pointed out areas of technical
concerns (TLV encoding, QOS problems, etc) and recommended fixes in
Editorial Notes.

I've received several comments from people on technical issues that
deal primarily with the ISO 11577 functionality that is also in
I-NLSP. I hope to follow up I-NLSP with a specification that addresses
these concerns, the concerns that I've already pointed out in the
Editorial Notes, and any concerns which this group will come up with.
This document is meant as a *starting point* not a finished
specification. It is my hope that the finished product will be
established by a consensus from this group.

Enough said. The document should be available sometime next week from
the normal IETF sources (as long as the confusion can be straightened
out quickly). If you would like to get a copy of it before it becomes
officially available, it can be obtained by anonymous ftp on
osi.ncsl.nist.gov (129.6.48.100) in /pub/security/draft-i-nlsp1.txt.

Sincerely,

Rob G.
