Seems to me that Van Jacobson IP/TCP header compression works very much along
these lines. When the receiver detects an error after decompression, the
sender times out and retransmits. This retransmission is sent uncompressed,
which automatically resynchronizes the decompressor.

VJ header compression has been around for quite a few years now, so it
would likely qualify as prior art.
