        The XEU and TIU are good examples of inline network crypto from the
latter 80s, but they also did not provide the selective bypass feature
mentioned as a critical feature in the patent.  However, the Semaphore
device certainly did (and still does) and that's an excellent example of
existing technology that was widely demonstrated and its product literature
certainly mentioned the selective bypass capability.  (Semaphore was a sort
of spinoff from Xerox, the folks who developed the XEU, as your mentioned.)

        One also could mention the Motorola NES, an IP (or MAC) layer, high
grade crypto product which was sold starting in the early 90s, but it too
lacked selective bypass.  The Motorola folks often viewed the Sempahore
devices as commercial versions of the NES, and in many respects that is an
accurate characterization.
