Those of us trying to build compact implementations in software (e.g.,
for the embedded market) also have issues with there being too many
different mandatory algorithms.  DESX has an extreme advantage here as
it shares the same algorithm "core" with DES and 3DES.

However, while I'm wearing my "cryptographic protocol engineer" hat,
that in and of itself makes me nervous..
