IDEA is patented, and is a poor choice for that reason.
The AES candidates strike me as too new to inspire a lot of confidence; in
a year or two they will have had a lot of attention paid to them and might
be serious contenders, but not today. In the long run, the AES winner is
a good bet, but the desire for at least an interim 3DES alternative is
here today, and waiting for the AES process to grind on seems undesirable.
