Bob,

I'm confused by your comments.  The TCP checksum does not cover all of the
IP header.  It includes only the source and dest IP addresses. So,
transport mode is unaffected by TTL value changes enroute.  Only the IP
header checksum is affected by such changes, and it is the responsibility
of a router to modify that checksum whenever it modifies any IP header
field, irrespective of what the next protocol is.
