I just want to point out a 'pro' of using ping in the clear to do
keepalive:
You can include the record route option and save the last good path for
reference when the peer becomes unreachable.
I am not advocating this becaue I don't pretend to know the security
consequences of running a dead-peer detection in the clear. Just food
for thought.
