RE: IKEv2 and NAT traversal
As one of the folks who was involved in the address space size
decisions in the late 70s and early 80s, I can confirm that the 32
bit size was chosen because of register/word sizes in current
machines, including IBM, DEC, and others. Danny Cohen, at ISI, tried
to persuade folks of the wisdom of variable length IP addresses, but
we were very concerned about the performance hit of dealing with
variable length addresses, especially in routers. 32 bits seems like
a lot back then. remember that we has class A, B, and C nets, which
also reflected our mode of how networking would be deployed, based on
the ARPANET, Ethernet, and several satellite and packet radio net
experiences.
needless to say, if we had to do it again ...
