dam-l Summer Internships Available at IRN

International Rivers Network is currently offering four paid
internships for the summer.  We encourage you to apply or
forward this message to people you think might be interested.
The deadline is this Friday, May 8.  A detailed job description
is included below.

IRN Summer Internship Program
APPLICATION DEADLINE: FRIDAY-MAY 8, 1998

International Rivers Network (IRN) is seeking four dedicated summer interns
with a commitment to environmental protection, human rights and activism to
assist with our priority campaigns.  IRN is a Berkeley-based non-profit
organization which promotes the rights of communities around the world
affected by river development projects.  We have programs in Southeast
Asia, China, Latin America and Southern Africa.

IRN interns will be paid a stipend of $300 per month and will be expected
to commit to at least 20 hours per week for the summer period, June 1
through August 14. Interns will also be expected to attend a 2-hour
biweekly training seminar. IRN will give priority to applicants interested
in continuing their work at IRN through the fall.


The Program
The aim of the program is to provide a combination of skills and
knowledge-based training for the interns. As part of the program, interns
will be expected to

--complete a specific 3-month project related to one of IRN's campaigns
(see below for further details).
--write at least one article for IRN's bi-monthly publication, World Rivers
Review.
--attend 2-hour biweekly training sessions. This will consist of (but is
not limited to) the following:
        -information-based workshops, on technical and political issues.
Technical issues could include hydrology, energy
development, the engineering aspects of dams etc. Political issues could
include the structure of the global financial system, how the Multilateral
Development Banks work, etc.
        -meetings and networking with other non profits in the Bay Area and
in the US, in order to share information and resources, and learn about the
strategies and campaigns of different organizations.
        -skills-based workshops on how to use the media, how to get
information out of the major development and/or financial institutions,
fundraising, writing skills, lobbying, strategy etc.
--      participate in IRN meetings, events and other activities.
--      help campaigns staff with various administrative tasks, such as
faxing and photocopying.


Current Internships Available

        Central America - Investigate and network with Central American
organizations to help determine how IRN can work with existing networks to
oppose destructive river projects.  Compile information and create a
database of contacts.  Gather information about power sector policies and
proposed and existing dams in Central America

        Chile - Research current issues facing the Biob̀o River in Chile,
including information on the historical/cultural uses and significance of
the river.  Update the current Biobio campaign package.  Help update and
determine what information should be presented on the Biob̀o section of
IRN's web page.

        Mekong region, Southeast Asia - Write paper to inform the Lao
government about the economics of hydropower and the experience of other
countries who have relied on the export of hydropower to generate foreign
exchange. Research private companies involved in dam construction in Laos.
Update web page.
        Three Gorges Dam, China - Learn about IRN's campaign to stop the
Three Gorges Dam in China and gain valuable campaign skills.  Gather
information on the financing and companies involved in the Three Gorges
Project and respond to information requests.  Perform outreach to local
NGOs to recruit them in the campaign to stop the dam.  Other projects may
include: Updating the web page and creating a GIS interface to present
information on the web page about archaeology, resettlement and other
issues in the area.

        Southern Africa - Research and create a small reader on Southern
African water issues to help educate community groups in Africa interested
in fighting large river development projects.  Perform research on current
issues facing the proposed Epupa Dam project in Namibia.  Update the
current Epupa campaign package.


Evaluation/Feedback
The intern will be encouraged to keep a journal throughout the program to
measure progress. The intern will meet with their supervisor at least once
per week to discuss the intern's weekly work, to air specific
issues/problems, to evaluate progress, and to prepare for the following
week's program.  At the end of the internship, an evaluation session will
be organized with IRN staff to appraise the intern's performance and enable
the intern to give feedback on the program.


Qualifications
- Interest in environmental protection, human rights and activism
- Strong research skills
- Strong writing skills
- Good computer skills (web skills desirable)
- Knowledge of a second language desirable (especially Spanish or Mandarin)
- Desire to learn and work in a fast-paced, stimulating environment
