-- STUDY QUESTIONS LAND OFFERED BY ENDESA FOR
RALCO.
The Chamber of Deputies Green Faction Friday released an
Agriculture Ministry study which questions the productivity of land
offered by Endesa to Pehuenche families in exchange for the land
Endesa will flood to construct its US$500 million Ralco dam.
Ralco's construction would mean the flooding of 600 hectares
of
Pehuenche land and the relocation of 91 families. To date, 83
families
have agreed to the move, signing land barter contracts with the
electric
company, while eight families refuse to sign, saying they will not put a
price on their land.
The Agriculture Ministry study says that soil quality is low on
the three plots Endesa has proposed for the relocation, that firewood will
be lacking in the area, and that the plots allow for the relocation of
less families than what Endesa has considered. Endesa responded to the
study, saying it is "slanted" and is "meant to discredit Endesa's
relocation plan," without an objective foundation.
The Green Faction also questioned the process, saying the study
was made available to Endesa before it was submitted to members of the
National Indigenous Development Board (Conadi).
