Low Volta Dam Water Level Cause Of Power Crisis

September 24, 1998

ACCRA, Ghana (PANA) - The Volta River Authority has said the power crisis in
Ghana resulted from low water level at the Volta reservoir and not due to
faulty equipment at Akosombo.

The authority also debunked other misconceptions that the dam had come to
the end of its life span and should be replaced.

''We wish to state categorically that the power problem is primarily the
result of low inflows into the reservoir arising from poor rainfall pattern
in the last few years and to the very high and unprecedented growth in
demand,'' Gilbert Ohene Dokyi, its chief executive, said at a signing
ceremony Wednesday for a turbine upgrading.

The project rehabilitation is estimated to cost 18 million US dollars and
will be completed in five years.

It will enable the plant to continue giving efficient and reliable service
for the next 25 years.

The turbines have been in use since January 1ve conflicts on the continent.

Speaking in Accra Wednesday, he pointed out that most of the conflicts
plaguing the continent could have been resolved long ago if African
governments through their military institutions exchanged programmes.

Albert made the call when he paid a courtesy call on his Ghanaian
counterpart, Alhaji Mahama Iddrisu, Minister of Defence, at his office at
Burma Camp.

He is in Accra leading a six-man delegation, including Col.Ibrahim Traore,
Burkinabe Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), which arrived in the country on
Tuesday for a five-day visit.

The visitors are holding discussions with their Ghanaian counterparts on
bilateral issues to help strengthen the long-standing friendly relations
between Ghana and Burkina Faso which dates back to 1984.
