VANDALS TO GO THIRSTY

The Northern Province's water affairs

department has laid criminal vandalism

charges against rural villagers in

Modombidzha village in the Sinthumile/

Kutama area on Wednesday after they

allegedly ripped out 113 water metres to

avoid paying for their water consumption.

The water metres formed part of a

R47,5-million water project in the area that

was opened by national water minister

Kader Asmal on October 10 this year. The

department will disconnect all standpipe

taps without meters in the village from

December 1. Disconnections are

scheduled to be completed by

mid-December, leaving Modombidzha

residents without water for the rest of the

Christmas season. Police are investigating

the vandalism case.
