CONADI SETS CRITERIA FOR RALCO DECISION
The National Indigenous Development Board met all
day Friday to
establish criteria for determine the validity of
land barter contracts
signed between power company Endesa and 83
Pehuenche families.
The board must now decide whether or not to
ratify these contracts.
Endesa's proposed US$500 million Ralco dam would
flood 600
hectares of sacred Pehuenche land, causing 91
Pehuenche families to
be relocated.
One of the criteria set was how to measure the
comparative value of
the land to be flooded and the land offered by
Endesa.
While such criteria apply to Ralco, the idea is
that they be used for
similar cases in the future.
Conadi will hold a new meeting on these matters
on Dec. 17, after
three board members have traveled to the Upper
Bio Bio to talk to
Pehuenches who support or reject the project.
