INDIGENOUS LAND SWAP QUESTIONED

A land swap agreement between 30 Pehuenche families from the upper Bio Bio
River and the Endesa power company is decidedly unfavorable to the
indigenous people involved, said Jose Santos Millao, an advisor to the
National Indigenous Council (Conadi).

Millao alleged Tuesday that the 585 hectare "El Huachi" property given the
30 families land has only 69 hectares of commercial eucalyptus trees and
can sustain only 18 families, an analysis confirmed by a Ministry of
Agriculture study.

Conadi Programs Director Luis Henriquez confirmed that the transfer of at
least 24 families to the new location had been
confirmed, while Conadi's newly appointed director Rodrigo Gonzalez said
the families had agreed to the swap.
