Objectives and Scope
The long term objective of the study is to ensure that only those dam
projects that are
agreed to be the "best" method of providing certain benefits,
following a comprehensive
assessment of alternatives will be constructed. These projects should
include mitigation of
adverse impacts to an acceptable level and to the satisfaction of the
stakeholders. To meet
this objective, the short-term purpose of the study is to prepare
recommendations on best
practice projects in Asia. The RETA will investigate four or five
river basins that have at least
one project consisting of a large dam or significant regulation works.

 Procurement
Individual consultants will be appointed to form an advisory panel in
the disciplines of water
resources engineering, economics, ecology and sociology. The RETA
will require the
services of international consultants for a total of eleven person
months.

 Project Processing Stage
      Approved by the Bank
                      :
                       28 December 1998
