GANDHINAGAR, Feb. 23.
The opposition in the Gujarat Assembly today repeatedly
interrupted the acting Governor, Mr K. G. Balakrishnan's
inaugural address to the House shouting slogans against the

The chanting of slogans from the opposition benches drowning
the acting Governor's voice forced Mr Balakrishnan to cut
short his speech and declare the address as read before
leaving the House.
As soon as the House assembled to begin its six-week- long
budget session and the acting Governor began reading his
inaugural address, the opposition members started raising
slogans and demonstrated placards denouncing the alleged
attacks on the Christians in the Dangs and other south Gujarat
districts. Slogans were also shouted against
``politicisation'' of the Narmada dam issue which hitherto was
considered as the ``people's project.''
Mr Balakrishnan in his address expressed happiness over the
Supreme Court's interim order and the consequent resumption of
the construction work after a gap of four years. He also
informed the House about another mega project, the ``Kalpasar
Project'' for the creation of a lake of potable water by
constructing a dam in the Gulf of Cambay and generating
electricity by harnessing tidal power. The BJP chief whip of
the legislature party, Mr Bharat Barot, in a statement,
condemned the opposition behaviour in the House.
