Kuwait Government to revamp Kenya irrigation project

April 16, 1999
By Nation Correspondent

Nairobi - The Kuwaiti Government will revive the Bura Cotton
Irrigation
Scheme in Tana River District, which stalled 10 years ago. The
general
manager, Mr. Peter Kuria, said at least Sh800 million is needed to
revive
the multi-million shilling irrigation scheme, whose pumping machine broke
down at Nanigi.

At the same time, Mr. Kuria said that another Sh10 million is required to
clear the canals, which are overgrown with bushes. He was speaking at Bura
Town on Monday during a tour to the region accompanied by the permanent
secretary in charge of relief and rehabilitation, Mr. Joshua Mutui, and
the national coordinator of Arid Land and Resource Management, Mr. Joseph
Lelei.

He said about 6,000 families, including upcountry farmers, urgently needed
food due to a water shortage in the region. He appealed to affected
farmers to be patient as the project would soon resume.

Meanwhile, two local MPs, Mr. Tola Kofa and Mr. Molu Shambaro, yesterday
praised the district security team for curbing banditry in the region.
