Narmada : A valley in turmoil
Whose Land is it anyway?

The people of Narmada valley have been
clamouring for justice for decades now, as
their life source, the Narmada river, is slowly
being turned into their nemesis. The struggle
against the Sardar Sarovar Dam has come to a new
turning point - the construction is to continue
to add another 5 metres to its height.

What is it that the people oppose - is it the
fact that another 30 villages will be submerged,
a few more thousand people robbed of their sustenance?
Or, is it that the development is for someone else
and the cost is borne by some others? Or, perhaps
it is more fundamental, a question of the right
of the villagers to decide their own fate and
that of their land.

The meeting will include introductory material as well
as the most recent update on the situation in the valley.
We will show a documentary titled "I will report honestly"
presented by Aravinda Pillalamarri. She works in India
as an AID fellow and is closely involved with the struggle in the
valley.
