Fresh debates on Arun III
KATHMANDU, May 8 (PR) - As the air of uncertainty surrounding the
Arun III
hydroelectric project grows, fresh debates on what could be the
ultimate
fate of the country’s largest development undertaking begin to
emerge.
ITDG (Intermediate Technology Development Group) has claimed some
small
and medium scale schemes are likely to produce cheaper energy than
Arun.
The Group spurred by the philosophy that says small is beautiful has
reached this conclusion "through a simple financial analysis on a
selected
range of hydropower schemes." The findings, an ITDG paper claims,
support
the contention that the omission of small and medium scale schemes
from
the Least Cost Generation Expansion Plan (LCGEP) was a serous
oversight.
