Subject: NFF Chairperson Harekrishna attacked
Dear friends,
Just now I got the message from Manisha, Calcutta, India that Harekrishna
Debnath, chairperson of the National Fishworkers Forum, member of the
co-ordination committee of the World Forum of Fishharvesters and Fishworkers
was attacked in the midnight and his right arm got wounded by armed goondas.
His house was completely robbed and his phone was cut. He spoke through the
phone. So he is out of danger.
He has been facing this threat all along because of his involvement with the
Fisher people. Recently he has been very much involved in the Chilka
struggles. He was present at the Orissa Assembly Blockade in Bhubaneswar on
2nd July. Many time he was threatened by the gang in Ashok Nagar, Habra,
Near Calcutta, West Bengal. There were a lot of attacks previously also.
I will be sending you more information when I get it. I have asked for the
Fax numbers of the Chief Minister and the Home Minister of West Bengal.
When I get them. I will be sending you the same.
As soon as you get this message, please communicate this to as many persons
as possible.Please send a telegram of condemnation of violence and ask the
Police to catch the culprits immediately to:
