Endesa Awards US$80mn Ralco Contracts

Chilean generator Endesa (NYSE: EOC) has awarded an US$80mn civil works

contract to a consortium of Spain's Nesco and Peru's Grana y Montero for

the development of its US$500mn 570MW Ralco hydroelectric project on the

Bio Bio river in Chile's southern Region VIII.

Nesco and Grana y Montero will work together in the Consorcio Araucaria

Ltd consortium.

Operations at the plant are scheduled to begin in 2002, and would provide

10% of power consumed by the central interconnected grid (SIC).

Although Endesa has already started construction of the project, it does

not have all the necessary legal permits in place and a number of

indigenous people have invoked their legal rights to remain on the land

that Endesa plans to flood for the reservoir.

France's Alsthom won a US$58mn contract in March to supply generation

equipment to the project.
