India to set up solar unit in Nam

NEW DELHI - President Sam Nujoma said here yesterday that India plans
to set up a solar panel
and modules manufacturing unit in Namibia that will also serve
countries in the South African
      Development Community (SADC).

During a visit to the state-funded Central Electronics Ltd (CEL) at
Sahidabad near New Delhi,
Nujoma said the unit will be used for solar electrification of two
Namibian villages.

Nujoma, who arrived in Delhi on Wednesday on a three-day state visit,
said the Namibian unit
will also cater to the needs of SADC countries, which include
Swaziland, Congo, Mozambique,
      Angola, Lesotho, Mauritius and Tanzania.

The Namibian unit will be used for both domestic and street lighting
and for water pumping
      systems and vaccine storage systems.

India also plans to help Namibia develop infrastructure for
production and marketing of such
systems through technology transfer, according to Ajay Kumar,
chairman of CEL. -
