Call To Manage DR Congo Water Resources Rationally

July 26, 1999

KINSHASA, Congo (PANA) - The Democratic Republic of Congoi deputy
environment minister, Salomon Banamuhere Baliene, has called
for the rational use of surface water resources which cover 3.5 percent or
82,000 sq.km of the entire territory of the country.

He told a seminar evaluating the country's water situation Thursday that
most of the water was located in the Congo basin, while that in the
far northeastern part of the country served as a water source for the Nile
basin.

Baliene deplored that the management of water resources was in chaos and
that the current mode of exploitation unsustainable.

He said all riparian countries to the Nile basin, including Congo, have
signed partnership agreements for the development of the water
resources of the basin through sub-regional cooperation.

The national report of each riparian state is expected to serve as an
instrument to facilitate the execution of development projects.

Baliene said Congo has abundant water resources, adding that hydric
resources alone constituted a considerable asset for the country's
sustainable development.
