dam-l some notes on the list/please feel free to post

Hello everyone on the list.

The list is a closed but *unmoderated* list dealing with dam impacts.
This means:

1. anyone can post to it. i don't moderate it. But I do keep an eye on
who gets on board. This is simply to prevent spam and flame fests.

So, by all means feel free to post! :)
Simply send your email to dam-l@ox.org

NB! Really large files won't be posted.

If you have a newsletter for example that you'd like to get ditributed,
email it to me: dianne@sandelman.ottawa.on.ca in ASCII format if at all
possible. And either you or I can send out a notice on the list that
it is available. I can then email copies to whoever wants them.

Some people on the liist may find their email will not take really large
files. I have tried to break up files into digestible bits but what I
may do soon is to

2. discussions, postings of news, developments, new research, requests
for information are all fair game.

Your posts concerning all aspects of water development are always welcome!

one proviso: :-(

Until I get the majordomo file that runs ths reset really *large* files
won't be posted. So if you've sent me something and haven't seen it
posted to the list it's because the listserv software currently gags
on it.

For example, if you have a newsletter you'd like to get ditributed,
you currently have two options email it to me:
dianne@sandelman.ottawa.on.ca in ASCII format if at all
possible. And either you or I can send out a notice on the list that
it is available. I can then email copies to whoever wants them.

Some people on the list may find their email will not take really large
files.

This isn't always possible becasue the software I have on the machine at
sandelman cannot read propriatary formats such as WORD. Hence I find
myself downloading via my freeware email reader but when it resends
it puts all ASCII text files into either bin hex or MIME formats;
these are not readable to some list members.

I'd like to be able to translate them into somethng everyone can read but
this is not always possible.

The second option? Email a notice to the list that you have a large file
[newsletters, articles, manuscripts of large size] available and ask
listmembers to mail *you*.

I am happy to forward files of any sort but again I wish to point out
that people on the list come from all over the world and are using a
plethora of operating systems and software and there can be trouble
with compatibilities and, ths readability.

Diversity is a good thing - and so is ASCII and pliantext files! :)

I am NOT discouraging people from sending multiple versions nor graphics
files [jpegs, gifs, wavs, aus etc etc.].

Michael Richardson [the sysop here at sandleman and a listmember] and
I [listowner and manager here :] try our best to translate those
things which are translatable into the best format for everyone concerned.

Every once in awhile I am very busy and send along something readable
to only a few by accident. Please feel free to let me know if you can't
read something or would like another format and we'll see if we can't
oblige you.

I know some of you already know these things and do these things but this
post is for some of the shyer and or quieter members of the list.

I encourage everyone to post and to feel free to discuss, share info.,
and ask each other questions. I realize we have quite a diverse crew
on board but that is a good thing.

Don't be afraid to post. :)

cheers!
-Dianne
