LESOTHO HIGHLANDS WATER DELIVERY TO SA INTERRUPTED
LESOTHO October 1 1999 Sapa
The scheduled transfer of water from the Lesotho Highlands water project to
South Africa on Friday would be interrupted until the end of October, the
South African Department of Water Affairs and Forestry and Trans-Calendon
Tunnel Authority (TCTA) jointly announced.
TCTA spokesman Willie Croucamp on Friday said the transfer would be delayed
to implement erosion protection work at the Ash River outfall structure near
Clarens in the Free State.
Farmers downstream of the Ash River had been informed about the planned
construction activities and had pledged their support, he said.
Croucamp said South Africa would compensate Lesotho for the loss of revenue
incurred from the interruption.
The Lesotho Highlands water project had been pumping water into South Africa
since January 1998, he said.

WATER
RAW WATER USERS SHOULD REGISTER WITH WATER DEPARTMENT
JOHANNESBURG October 12 Sapa
The Department of Water Affairs and Forestry intends charging users of
untreated water if they fail to register with the department.
Those affected were unregistered users of water directly from dams, rivers,
streams or underground aquifers, the department said in a statement issued
on Friday. Such users were now expected to pay for the water.
Barbara Schreiner, chief director of Water Use and Conservation, said those
who used water from a local authority, water board or water service provider
need not register.
The new registration process was expected to assist the department with
information regarding the consumption of water.
Shreiner said the process was also expected to assist in implementing the
new pricing strategy from April 1, 2000.
Failure to comply would result in stiff penalties, Schreiner said.
