             Our Bangalore Bureau

SOLAR energy is perhaps the third largest sector that can
be tapped in India after the information technology (IT) and
life sciences industries. Bangalore which is known as the
"Silicon Valley" of India, also happens to be the solar capital of
India, said P Sudarshan, managing director, IntellSouthtech Ltd.

Close to 30-40 per cent of solar products in India are
either manufactured or installed in Bangalore, said K Srinivas
Kumar, general manager-marketing, Kotak Urja Pvt Ltd (K-Urja).

Globally, amongst all cities with a population of over 5
million, Bangalore gets the largest amount of solar radiation,
according to Chandy Mathew, managing director, Duroflex Ltd.

Some of the largest solar products manufacturers like Tata BP Solar,
Siemens Solar and Kotak Urja are based in Bangalore he
said.

The global oil giants like Shell, BP (British Petroleum)
and Amoco are amongst the largest investors in solar energy, he
said and added that a significant portion of such investments are
going to their subsidiaries in India.

"Smiles99" (Solar Millenium Expo & Seminar) will be held
at Bangalore from October 28 to October 31 at the JN Tata Auditorium.

             `Smiles99" is a non-governmental initiative promoted by
Unisun Technologies group, India, to create awareness among the
public about the enormous potential of solar energy, especially
for India. The main focus of `Smiles99" will be solar energy
applications and financing.
