WATER RESEARCH FUND
A Water Research Fund has been established to support
research projects addressing
sustainable utilisation of water resources in the Southern
Africa region. The purpose
of the Fund is to build research capacity among regional
institutions and individuals
as well as to promote the utilisation of research results
in the planning and
management of water resources in the sub-region. This is
in appreciation of the fact
that research activities in the water sector in most
countries of the SADC are limited,
largely due to lack of capacity to develop and carry out
sound research projects as
well as funding constraints among other things.
The Research Fund is managed by the Institute of Water and
Sanitation Development
(IWSD), Harare, Zimbabwe, with initial funding from Sida.

procedures are being finalised and application details for
the fund will be placed on

Call for proposals
Research proposals are invited from Southern African
Development Community
(SADC) nationals and residents for possible research
grants from the Water
Research Fund. The proposed research projects can fall
into any of the following
research areas of Integrated Water Resources Management.
1. Water use, conservation and technologies
Sustainable management of water resources using an
integrated approach
Water demand management
Wastewater reuse.
Micro-catchment management practices.
Land use practices and their influence on water
resources.
Systems approach in IWRM.
2. Social, political and economic issues
Social and economic influences of water on community
development
Cost recovery and willingness to pay.
Ecological sanitation.
Water allocation and reallocation strategies at
micro- and macro-river basin
scales.
Gender issues related to IWRM.
Water and politics.
3. Policy and legal issues.
Water and security (in a conflict related perspective
on a local, regional and
international level).
Management of shared water courses.
Institutions and their role in IWRM.
Legal framework for transboundary water.
Water harnessing and release policies and their
influence on river systems
(river morphology, sediment transport and other
ecosystems).
Interbasin transfers.
Maximum allocation per project will be US$50 000
accessible over a two-year
period.
Elligibility for grants
The research grants will be disbursed to researchers
and/or research teams who are
attached to government departments, universities,
non-governmental organisations
or other institutions. The funds will not be available to
researchers as individuals.
Researchers should therefore be attached to a recognised
institution in order for them
to have access to the funds. Although preference will be
given to applications from
SADC nationals and residents, the fund will also be used
to facilitate research
collaboration at regional and international level.
However, the research projects will
have to originate from a SADC country.
Selection criteria
A number of criteria will be used in deciding on project
funding. In reviewing the
projects, the relevance, quality of proposal and
feasibility will be assessed. Projects
whose focus is on the themes of capacity building,
promotion and development of
knowledge will be given priority, as well as those
projects that demonstrate gender
perspective, regional co-operation and
multi-disciplinarity. Links to implementing
institutions will be an advantage.
