Subject: RALCO DAM EXPECTED TO RECEIVE FINAL AUTHORIZATION.

The Electricity and Fuels Commission Tuesday sent the Economy Ministry the
required documents needed to finally deliver the concession for the 570
megawatt hydroelectric Ralco dam to power company Endesa.
Processing the documents is expected to take several weeks. Once
this is done the Ministry will be able to authorize the Spanish-controlled
company to continue work on the controversial power station, situated in
the upper Bio Bio Valley in southern Region VIII.
This new authorization is necessary since the current one is only
provisional. It will allow the main work on the dam and reservoir
project, especially the principal wall, to get underway. The lack of
authorization of the US$500 million project threatened to delay the launch
date from 2002 to 2003.
