Nigerian Niger state to build
two hydro-electric dams

LAGOS, Nov 15 (Reuters) - Nigeria's
northern Niger state plans to build two new
hydro-electric dams with a combined
capacity of 2,150 megawatts, a local
newspaper said on Monday.

The mainly government-owned daily Times
quoted the state governor Abdulkadir Kure
as saying talks were on with a foreign
company on building the dams at Gurara
Falls and at Zungeru on the Kaduna river.

``(Kure) said the dam that would be
constructed on the Gurara Falls was expected
to generate 150 megawatts, while that of
Zungeru would generate 2,000 megawatts,''
the paper said.

A number of foreign firms have indicated
interest to invest in Nigeria's power sector
since President Olusegun Obasanjo's
government deregulated the sector to end the
monopoly of the state power company
NEPA.

Despite installed capacity of about 5,000
megawatts, current output is just above
2,000 megawatts, and large parts of Africa's
most populous country of more than 108
million go without power, often for
prolonged periods.
