The Spanish National Committee on Large Dams has the honour to
invite all the Dam Engineers to the IVth. Meeting of the European
Club of the National Committees of the ICOLD. In this meeting an
International Symposium on New Trends and Guidelines on DAM SAFETY
is going to be held in which speakers from Europe and the rest of
the world will present the state of the art in this so important
theme in the field of dams, both in new structures or in the
accommodation of existing dams to the actual safety criteria. Also,
the researches carried out by the European Working Groups and the
works to be developed in the future will be presented. Among the
most important objectives of this meeting should be emphasized that
of promoting the collaboration and interchange of knowledge among
the Engineers of the European countries and that of promoting joint
     investigations within the European region.

Spain has at the present time 1,147 dams in operation, which
represents a total reservoir capacity of some 54 km3 which allows
to serve the demands for irrigation, water supply, hydropower, as
also to mitigate the damages which flooding traditionally produces.
Actually there are 37 large dams under construction, some of which
will be visited during the Study Tour after the Symposium. For
these reasons, Dam Engineering in Spain has acquired a great
development in the last decades, and in this meeting the
achievements obtained are going to be explained, and the actual
situation and the future prospects will be discussed.

For all this, we invite your to attend this meeting and the
International Symposium that is going to be celebrated in the
Olympic City of Barcelona which I hope will give you the
opportunity to pass some agreeable days and show you its
     Mediterranean enchantment.
