               Serious flooding in South Africa

Serious flooding caused by heavy rains around the South African
town of Durban has led to the deaths of sixteen people.

Most of the dead were crushed in mudslides or drowned when
               swollen rivers burst their banks.

Police say some two-thousand people, mainly from low-lying
shanty areas in the eastern coastal town, have been left
homeless.

One local government official estimated repairs to roads and
bridges would cost at least six-million dollars.

Torrential rains have been falling since Tuesday.
