Nan talks to boost river region trade
Thailand, Laos, China and Vietnam will meet in Nan next
week for talks on ways of boosting trade, investment and
tourism co-operation.
Officials from the four countries will discuss plans to
develop infrastructure and streamline transport and trade
procedures to facilitate road, river and air links,
provincial governor Pol Sub-Lt Thanapong Chakkrapak said.
The meeting could pave the way for increased promotion
of business, investment, tourism, travelling and culture,
the governor said. Increasing co-operation with Laos, China
and Vietnam would boost business potential for northern
provinces of Thailand.
Deputy Prime Minister Supachai Panitchpakdi and Deputy
Foreign Minister Sukhumbhand Paribatra will attend the
gathering from Jan 21-23 with the ambassadors from Laos,
China and Vietnam expected to head the delegations from
their countries.
Officials and traders in Nan are promoting their
province as a centre for linking with northern Laos and
Vietnam, and southern China.
They argue a 38km road already exists from the Nan
border to the Mekong river in Laos. It needs upgrading, but
the government last February commissioned a survey.
A bridge is also needed over the river.
