                  Indian Government: Indo-Namibian
Cooperation in The Field of Renewable
                  Energy
                  ( January 28, 2000 )

                  JAN 28, 2000, M2 Communications - The Namibian Minister
for Mines and
Energy His Excellency Mr. Jesaya Nyamu called on Shri M.
Kannappan,
Minister of State for Non-Conventional Energy Sources on
January 28, 2000
and held discussions on matters of mutual cooperation
between the two
countries in the field of the Renewable Energy. The areas
of solar energy,
biogas and wind energy came up for detailed discussions.
The Minister offered
Indian cooperation in various fields of renewable energy
including wind energy
in which India has developed a strong base. The talks
took place in a cordial
                  atmosphere.

India is supporting a demonstration programme for
electrification of two
Namibian villages through the solar photovoltaic
technology. This project is
being executed through the Central Electronics Ltd.,
which manufactures solar
photovoltaic cells in India. The Indian assistance would
be of the order of
rupees one crore. Assistance is also being provided to
Namibia for
construction of biogas plants in ten villages based on
Indian designs and
technology. For this purpose, three Namibian experts have
been trained in
India and two Indian experts are being deputed to Namibia
for assistance in
setting up of these biogas plants.
