U.N. gives dlrs 4.2 million in food aid for Laos

   BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) -- The United Nations World Food 
Program has given dlrs 4.2 million in food aid to Laos for 
a three-year project to get villagers help build roads and 
dams, the KPL Laotian state news agency reported Friday.
   Villagers will be given food in return for labor on 
infrastructure development and extending rice fields in 
Luang Namtha, Xieng Khouang, Khammouane, Savannakhet, 
Attopeu and Sekong provinces, said KPL, monitored in 
Bangkok.
   Laos, a rural nation in Southeast Asia of under five 
million people, is one of the world's poorest countries and 
is heavily dependent on foreign aid.
