dam-l TAKE ACTION TO STOP 3 GORGES DAM!!!

Take Action and Sign the petition at <http://www.floodwallstreet.org>
calling on Wall Street investment banks to stop financing the world's most
socially and environmentally destructive dam.

While shareholder activists have been putting pressure on major banks
involved in Three Gorges Dam, it is critical that between now and April
2000 these banks' present and future customers voice their concerns about
this destructive project.

If you're a DISCOVER or CITIBANK credit cardholder, or if you're customer of
Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, Chase Manhattan Bank, and/ or
Citigroup (which includes Smith Barney Mutual Funds, Primerica Financial
Services and Traveler's Insurance), write a letter
expressing your concerns about their involvement in Three Gorges Dam.
Remind them: you can take your business elsewhere. Information on who you
should contact can be found here:

Brief Update:
The $30 billion (and rising) dam is in its second phase of construction and
is plagued with devastating problems. Millions of dollars in resettlement
funds have been embezzled. Farmers have suffered at the hands of the police
and oppressive project promoters. Critics worry that securing the safety
and livelihood of the 1.9 million displaced farmers and residents is
impossible; arable land is lacking. Energy experts worry that the project
is derailing China's development of more appropriate and effective energy
technology.

Opponents of the project in China - expert hydrologists, sociologists,
journalists, and politicians- have all been forbidden to voice their
criticism since 1989. Books critical of the project have been banned and
Dai Qing, the project's most vocal opponent, lives in Beijing under police
surveillance. We hope that you choose to speak up, sign the petition, and
spread the word

We encourage you to use www.floodwallstreet.org as a tagline in your email
signatures, and welcome you and your organization to link to the site freely.

The dam is desperate for foreign money. Don't let it be yours.

Sincerely,
Three Gorges Action Coalition

The Three Gorges Action Coalition consists of human rights and
environmental groups working to halt the flow of foreign capital to the
Three Gorges Dam.
