Water Rates Go Up in Mauritius

February 8, 2000

PORT LOUIS, Mauritius (PANA) - Authorities in Mauritius said the increase
in the price of water in the island nation since the beginning of
February was intended to incite the population to save the commodity.

The Public Utilities Minister Rashid Beebeejaun, announced Monday that
there would be a 96-percent rise in water rates for hotels, 39 percent
for trade purposes and 38 percent for industrial use.

Water rates before the rise were 3 rupees per cubic metre for the first 15
cubic metres for domestic consumers, 8.18 rupees per cubic metre for the
first 100 cubic metres for commercial use, 7.27 rupees per cubic metre for
the first 100 cubic metres pumped to industries and 5 rupees per cubic
metre for the first 50 cubic metres for the agricultural customers.

Beebeejaun also said that the government was investing about six billion
rupees in several projects in the water sector in order to improve its
distribution throughout the island (24.05 rupees = 1 US dollar).
