CANADIAN PARTICIPATION :
Naser Faruqui, the only Canadian among the next generation of water leaders
selected recently by the International Water Resources Association and the
Stockholm International Water Institute, will attend. He can provide media
valuable background to better understand water issues to be discussed.
WHY IS THIS EVENT IMPORTANT ?
Urbanization will create even more problems in developing countries as their
economic structures become increasingly oriented towards industry and
services. The urban population of developing countries is predicted to grow
from one-third in 1990 to over 50 % by 2020, with a particular rise of
megacities, especially in Asia. These trends will dramatically affect water
management.
This Second World Water Forum will attract considerable media attention.
Ministers responsible for water from around the world will attend.
Non-governmental organizations will also attend, hoping to influence the
agenda of decision makers, and ultimately the water policies in countries of
the North and the South. Issues to be discussed at the Forum include: water
quality; access and availability; conflicts sparked by water scarcity; water
mismanagement, and the health of communities.
IN CANADA, WHO CAN TALK ABOUT THESE ISSUES ?
Naser Faruqui, civil engineer, specializes in water resources. As a Senior
Program Specialist with CanadaÉs International Development Research Center
(IDRC), in Ottawa, he is responsible for managing and monitoring research
projects related to water resource management, water supply and sanitation,
and the environment.
Naser Faruqui is one of fourteen Water Leaders of the next generation, as
selected recently by the International Water Resources Association and the
Stockholm International Water Institute. Mr Faruqui was chosen from among 250
candidates from all around the world.
As a member of this group of young professionals, Naser Faruqui is involved
in the preparation of a global vision on water management. In their first
presentation, the members of the group will share their perspectives and
vision on water issues at this Second World Water Forum and particularly at
the Ministerial Conference that will take place on this occasion in The
Hague.
The expertise of Naser Faruqui in developing countries includes: small hydro
for rural development, coastal pollution, urban water management, low-cost
natural wastewater treatment, reuse of water in agriculture, water demand
management especially in the Middle East, water management in Islam, water
policies.
IMPORTANT NOTE :
Naser Faruqui is fluent in English and French. He will be in Ottawa until
March 3, 2000.
