ZAMBIA-FLOODS

ZAMBIAN VILLAGERS HIT BY FLOODS
LUSAKA 6 March 2000 Sapa-AFP

More than 12,000 villagers in the Chiawa area about 100 kilometers (65
miles) from the capital Lusaka were hit by floods after the gates of Kariba
dam were opened last week, local media reported Monday.

A spokesman for the villagers told AFP that houses and crops had been
washed away and they were appealing for compensation from the Zambezi River
Authority, which manages the vast dam.

"They must provide us with food since all our maize and bananas are gone,"
said Samu Katiyo.

Vice-President Christon Tembo told state radio that the government would
airlift relief food to the area.

He said the department of disaster management had already dispatched
officials to move the villagers to a safer place where they could erect
tents for them.

The floodgates were opened to relieve pressure on the dam, which provides
hydroelectric power for both Zambia and Zimbabwe.
