LETTERS to the EDITOR - MARCH 10
Keep costs in open

I agree with Chanda L. Meek (We all pay Hydro's social costs, March 1) that
Hydro should "integrate the ecological and social 'cost of doing business'
into its planning." Otherwise, the real costs are hidden, and transferred to
the taxpayer or to first nations suffering environmental degradation.
I particularly applaud the suggestion of developing the biogas capacity of
the Smithfield hog plant. This would be an elegant solution to two problems,
turning the problem of noxious environmental wastes from the hog industry
into an environmentally friendly solution to our energy needs.
It is that kind of creative thinking that turns waste products from one
industry into resources for another industry.
