President warns of water crisis
Hamirpur (Rajasthan), March 28. (PTI): President K R Narayanan
today warned that the world is going to face severe water shortage
if this ``life line of all species'' is not used properly
and called for
proper methods for its conservation.
``Water is the basis of life. It is increasingly being
realised by the
rich and the industrialised, as well as by poor and developing
countries that non-availability of water is becoming a very grave
problem,'' he said after presenting the `Down to Earth - Joseph C
John Award' here in Rajasthan's Alwar district.
Water will be a scarce commodity if rain water is not harvested
properly, he said after presenting the award to the village
community of Bhaonta-Kolyala for its outstanding work in rain
water harvesting, rural engineering and revival of the river Arvari.
Water bodies are drying up due to their over-exploitation in rural
areas, he warned, calling for adoption of proper methods for its
conservation.
Recipients of the award for the ``Best Environmental Community''
of the country, which carries a cash prize of Rs 1,00,000 and a
citation, included three women.
