dam-l kenya to sell more power to uganda

This story comes at a time that a US company, AES, is promoting hydropower
in Uganda, saying it will create power to export to Kenya. Recent
scientific research reveals that persistent drought is becoming an
increasing problem, likely because of climate change.

Kenya to Import More Power from Uganda

( May 11, 2000 )

NAIROBI (May 11) XINHUA - Kenya will import more electricity from neighboring
Uganda due to a serious power deficit, according to a senior official.

The Kenya Times Thursday quoted Kenyan Minister for Energy Francis
Masakhalia as saying that the hydro-power generating sector faced a major
set-back caused by persistent drought in most areas of the east African
country.

Masakhalia said that the power from Uganda will make up 30 percent of the
total domestic supply in Kenya, up from 10 percent currently.

The minister noted that a low water level at dams had crippled the
capacity of generating power by 30 percent.

Limited power capacity had forced the government to undertake rationing
system which affected the economy greatly, Masakhalia said.

Kenya has adopted power rationing system since last September, which has
hampered the industry and brought inconvenience to residents' daily lives.
