		    JOB  ANNOUNCEMENT
		SOUTH ASIA CAMPAIGNER

International Rivers Network (IRN) is a nonprofit human rights and
environmental organization based in Berkeley, California. Since 1986,
IRN has worked to halt inappropriate interventions into river systems
and to promote the right of riverine people around the world to
participate in development decisions which impact their lives.

IRN is helping to halt new dam and other water resource development
projects; promoting alternatives for meeting needs for water, energy,
and flood management; and changing the policies of international financial
institutions.

We are looking for a South Asia Campaigner to be based in our Berkeley,
California office. The candidate should have experience with activism on
environmental, social justice and human rights issues at both the South
Asian and international levels. The candidate should have excellent English
writing skills and be fluent in at least one South Asian language. 
The candidate
should ideally be familiar with anti-dam struggles in South Asia and the search
for alternatives to large dams. Experience in fundraising a plus.

Tasks include:
        * researching and writing articles, reports, press releases 
and action alerts;
        * maintaining and building contacts with S. Asian and 
international activists;
        * lobbying foreign funders and companies involved in 
destructive water projects in South
           Asia;
        * working with the media;
        * public speaking;
        * event organizing;
        * raising funds from foundations and individuals;
        * supervising interns and volunteers.

Must be able to meet deadlines and spend up to two months per year travelling
in South Asia and elsewhere.

The South Asia Campaigner will work under the supervision of the Campaigns
Director.

Starting Salary: Range from $30,000 depending on experience.
