Big wins for European firms

Contracts for the purchase of governor and excitation (sic) systems for
the left bank
power station of the Three Gorges project were officially signed yesterday in
Beijing.

Two international industrial giants respectively won the contracts after an
intense bidding process that began on March 30.

French company Alstom Power was awarded 14 units of the governor system worth
US$12.76 million. Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation, from Germany, was
chosen to provide 14 units of the excitation system worth US$12.79 million.

The Chinese producers, the Harbin Electric Machine Co Ltd from Heilongjiang
Province and the Dongfang Electric Machine Co Ltd from Deyang of Sichuan
Province, were chosen as the subcontractors.

The two winners have committed to transferring their advanced technology to the
two Chinese subcontractors, thus guaranteeing each of the domestic
producers separately to manufacture five units of the two different systems
with
final assembly and system test.

The successful completion of this round of international bidding and contract
signing symbolizes a further progress of the large infrastructure project,
said Li Shizhong, deputy director of the Three Gorges Project Construction
Committee under the State Council.

He Gong, vice-president of the China Yangtze Three Gorges Project Development
Corp, said the governor and excitation systems will play a very important
role in the smooth and timely operation of the left bank power station by
2003.
"The winners should abide by the contracts to deliver equipment on time and to
transfer technology completely," He said.

This round of international bidding is the third for the left bank power
station. The China Yangtze Three Gorges Project Development Corp has also
purchased hydropower-generating units and high-voltage electric equipment
through international bidding.
