In the aftermath of the recent protests in Seattle and Washington, DC --
which drew national attention to the trade policies of the WTO, IMF and
World Bank -- some of the nation’s leading progressives are convening in
Denver to unveil an affirmative vision of democratic reforms for the
nation and the world.
Speakers will talk about the interrelated issues of:
1) ENVIRONMENTAL DESTRUCTION (E.G. LOGGING, GLOBAL WARMING);
2) UNFAIR AND UNSUSTAINABLE WORLD TRADE POLICIES; and
3) THE NEED FOR MEANINGFUL CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM.
The event begins with David Brower delivering a major public policy
address on the fate of democracy and the planet. He will unveil his
vision on how America can promote policies that put people and the
planet before profits. Mr. Brower will also speak about an alarming new
landmark report on global climate change, just released by a prestigious
panel of U.S. government scientists and other experts.
Following Mr. Brower’s speech, “Granny D” will lead a brief march from
the church to the World Trade Center complex, where Jim Hightower will
speak about the need to rein in the world’s renegade trade institutions.
>From there, we will march several more blocks to the Capitol for a rally
on the west steps of the Capitol. Granny D will speak on the corrupting
influence of special interest money in politics and what Americans can
do to take back our Democracy.
Other prominent speakers to be announced.
