dam-l LS: Vietnam to sell power to Cambodia

Vietnam to sell power to Cambodia
( July 04, 2000 )
Hanoi (dpa) - Energy-hungry Vietnam has agreed to sell electricity to
neighbouring Cambodia, official media reported on Tuesday.
Under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed Monday, Hanoi is to sell
80 megawatts of electricity per year to Cambodia until 2003 for an
undisclosed price, Vietnam News Agency said.
Sales will rise to 200 megawatts or more from 2005, it added.
The power is earmarked for Cambodian provinces on the occasionally disputed
border with Vietnam, and for the capital Phnom Penh.
Vietnam and Cambodia agreed in talks in Phnom Penh last week to complete
their sensitive border demarcation this year.
Vietnam Minister of Industry Dang Vu Chu and his Cambodian counterpart Suy
Sem signed the MoU on the sidelines of the 18th ASEAN Energy Ministers
meeting, which gathered in Hanoi Monday.
Prime Minister Phan Van Khai told the meeting that two large regional
projects, the ASEAN Integrated Power Grid and the ASEAN Pipeline, look
likely to be implemented in the "foreseeable future."
Vietnam, whose influence extends throughout Indochina, also sells power to
Laos despite Vietnam struggling to meet its own power needs.
A massive hydroelectric dam in northern Vietnam has been delayed for years,
while the country is gradually working to finalize a deal that would see
gas flow to a 3,600-megawatt power complex.
