072300 Mekong Basin Countries Pledge To Mekong's Substainable Development

    Ha Noi, July 23 (VNA) -- Viet Nam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand have
agreed to carry out a programme to exploit Mekong river's resources while
protecting environment in the region.
    The agreement was reached at a recent Mekong River Commission's
conference held in Phnome Penh, Cambodia.
    The four countries in this conference also agreed to increase their
contributions to the implementation of nine projects relating to
substainable development in the Mekong basin.
    The Mekong basin brings great economic value to riverine countries,
particularly for hydraulic works, electricity, transport, water resources
and tourism. However, exploitation of the river will increase at an alarming
rate as the population in the region is predicted to raise by 50 percent in
25 years.
    The first conference on cooperation for Mekong basin development was held
in Kualar Lumpur, Malaysia, in June 1996. The initiative aimed to facilitate
economic development for all ASEAN member countries in the Mekong
basin.--VNA
