Sangh Parivar to intensify stir against Tehri Dam: PTI

The Sangh Parivar Tuesday intensified its agitation against the
Tehri dam on river Ganga with Bharatiya Janata Party MP
Swami Chinmayananda announcing a "Haridwar to Delhi"
march by Hindu
saints from July 26 to "pressurise" the Centre to
scrap the controversial
                 project.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad- sponsored 'Ganga Jan
Jagran Yatra' (Ganga
awareness march) would arrive in Delhi on July 31 and submit a
memorandum to President K R Narayanan and
Vice-President Krishan Kant
on August 1 demanding that work on the project be
stopped forthwith,
Swami Chinmayananda said in New Delhi.

Describing the Ganga as the country's "life line",
Chinmayananda claimed that
the construction of the dam would stop the water flow
of the river considered
holy by millions of Hindus, deprive it of its
self-purification qualities and make
the quake-prone area more vulnerable to devastation.

Denying that the stir was only "symbolic" as BJP-led
governments were in
power both at the Centre and Uttar Pradesh, he said,
"I was in the forefront
of Ram Janamabhoomi movement and you know what happened. The
government's reaction will depend on our action," he said.

VHP leader Ashok Singhal had last week written to the
Centre demanding
that work on the dam be stopped forthwith.

Chinmayananda suggested power generation through a
run of the river
scheme in place of the Tehri project.

Denying any 'political motive' behind the movement or
any rift among the
saints on the issue, He claimed that he had all along
supported Sunder Lal
                 Bahuguna's opposition to the project.
