Heads pump for Lake Chad water project
July 29 2000 at 01:11PM
N'Djamena - Four African heads of state have agreed to study a scheme to
divert river water to Lake Chad, which environmentalists fear could dry up
because of desertification, said Chad government sources on Saturday.
The heads of state of Chad, Nigeria, Niger and Sudan agreed at a meeting
late on Friday to find $1-million (about R6,95-million) for the feasibility
study.
One possibility is diverting water from rivers to the south into the River
Chari, which flows into the lake.
Chad, Niger, Nigeria and Cameroon all border the lake.
The heads of state present at the meeting also discussed security problems
in the area of the lake.
A joint force could be set up, grouping officers from member states of the
Lake Chad Basin Commission, which consists of the countries at Friday's
meeting plus Cameroon and Central African Republic. - Reuters
