Residents share water with stock

By Mkhululi Titi

CENTANE -- Hundreds of residents here live in daily fear of falling ill
from the water they drink because they share it with livestock.

Some residents have to travel 30km to get clean water from other villages
while those without transport queue for hours at one of the streams near
the town.

Some government developmental projects here are at a standstill because
there is no water in the town after the main electric pump station which
had been supplying water for over a century was destroyed by fire in June.

"This is an acute problem facing our town but we hope that if the
government intervenes we will get over it," Mayor Jongwaligqili Nayo said.

The water crisis started when several electric pumps were destroyed by
unknown people.

"Because of this crisis water used for bathing is kept for flushing
toilets," PAC chairman Richard Ntsombo said. He said it would cost about R9
000 to repair the damaged pipes.

Nayo said the municipality had not received a guarantee from the police
that any new pipes would not be vandalised.

Although it appeared from a meeting with Macibe village political leaders
that the majority of residents were not against the installation of the
water pipes, relations between the municipality and some residents turned
sour when the council erected a sewerage site near the village two years
ago.

However, a letter signed by villagers mandating the municipality to carry
on with the sewerage site was shown to the Daily Dispatch.

"We want people to know that the majority of Macibe villagers are not
against development in this area and we support all developmental projects
aimed at improving our lives," villager Nqabelo Sayo said.
